- My 12 year old quarter horse has a horizontal crack in the hoof, about 1.5 inches from his coronary band large enough to put my finder in it. Should I leave him in his stall until my shoer can see him?
- Can a hoof hardener & gel be used at the same time, or should one be used for a while, then the other?

The horizontal crack is most likely the result of an abcess which migrated out of the food at the coronary band. It's probably been there for some time, and shouldn't cause problems until it hinders nailing a shoe on. But, keep an eye on it, as sometimes the area will be susceptible to entry of foreign matter, and more abcess is possible.

Both of these products are good for protecting a hoof from taking in too much water, and can be used at the same time. Apply the hardener to the hoof wall, and the gel to the sole.
